A Metaphor for ADD/ADHD
Life can present us with many seemingly insurmountable challenges. ADHD and ADD are only one of life’s challenges. I am personally very fond of mountains. Several years ago, I journeyed with my two sons to Everest Base Camp. The climbers, with whom we stayed, ages 17 to 65 years, were working hard to master the skills necessary to summit the mountain. Each climber needed to learn specific technical alpine skills, then translate those skills into methods that worked within their individual capabilities and climbing styles. We learned on our way down that every climber had made it to the top. The techniques and methods that they diligently mastered while in base camp had enabled them to reach their goal.
In my experience, ADD/ADHD can seem like an insurmountable mountain. Helping people learn the skills that they need to manage their ADD/ADHD and translating those skills into personal methods that work for them is my skill. I help my clients understand how their ADD/ADHD brain works, then develop personal methods that help them sustain their focus and concentration in ways which serve them for the rest of their lives. I have come to regard myself as a “translator” who assists individuals to become better students and teachers, physicians and lawyers, mothers and fathers.
